(CNN Español) –– La cantante cubanoestadounidense Celia Cruz, fallecida en 2003, es la primera mujer afrolatina en aparecer en una moneda de 25 centavos de dólar acuñada por la Casa de la Moneda de Estados Unidos, que fue presentada este jueves en la página de la institución.
Celia Cruz se convierte así en la decimocuarta mujer en recibir este homenaje, como parte del programa American Women Quarters, que se puso en marcha en 2022. Otras mujeres que han recibido esta distinción son la escritora y activista Maya Angelou, la exprimera dama Eleanor Roosevelt y la periodista mexicoamericana Jovita Idar.
La moneda muestra una imagen de Celia Cruz sonriendo con su icónica frase: “¡Azúcar!”. El otro lado tiene una efigie de George Washington, diseñado por la artista Laura Gardin Fraser en 1932 para conmemorar el 200 aniversario del natalicio del primer presidente de Estados Unidos.
El programa American Women Quarters continuará hasta 2025 y tiene como meta honrar los avances y contribuciones de mujeres a Estados Unidos.
